The Global Educational Community presents an engaging and rich professional development opportunity for attendees. The content of the Academy pulls together professional expertise in key areas related to authentic, future-focused learning: authentic project based learning, global citizenship, literacy, and social emotional learning and critical thinking.During the two-and-a-half-day academy, attendees will learn about new practices and resources, as well as work in small groups, to produce materials that can be used in their classrooms. Attendees will have dedicated time for peer to peer learning and networking.

Gwendolyn Battle-Lavert
"Who Say's I Can't Read: Impactful Reading Strategies to Close the Gap" Workshop
Dr. Gwen Lavert

Dr. Lavert has extensive hands-on educational experience, including as a classroom teacher, principal, teacher preparation faculty member, literacy specialist and international literacy consultant. She works to create a meaningful difference through improved educational operations, enhanced academic standards, and new initiatives. Dr. Lavert has a Ph. D in leadership and administration and a Masters in Literacy.

Josh Amstutz
"Yes, Global Competence CAN be Taught in Every Classroom!” Workshop
Josh Amstutz

Josh Amstutz is a math teacher at Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He serves in multiple leadership positions, including the Head of the Math Department and Coordinator of the Academy of Global Studies. He was received the AFS 2022 Global Educator of the Year award and is an Alumnus of Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms. Josh has a MAT in Mathematics.

"Compassionate Systems Framework: Taking care of ourselves, each other, and the environment.” Workshop
Trina Haygaru

Trina Haygaru is the Lower School Principal at the International School of Indiana. In 2016 Trina began working on the development of new instructional tools based on the Compassionate Systems Framework, which began as a collaboration between the International Baccalaureate and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The work has led to the development of the Center for Systems Awareness of which Trina is a Master Practitioner in Curriculum Development.

"Authentic Learning Through Project Based Learning” Workshop
Dr. Chad LeDune

Dr. LeDune works for Southwest School Corporation in Sullivan, Indiana. He holds a Master’s degree in STEM Leadership, a Master’s certification in STEM Education, and is certified by the National Institute of STEM Education. He recently earned his Ed. D in instructional technology. He recently published a book titled, Discomfort by Design, that promotes an instructional model and mindset that fosters academic, life, and social skills in all students. He is passionate about empowering people to step outside their comfort zones and into personal and professional growth.

Who Say's I Can't Read: Impactful Reading Strategies to Close the Gap

with Dr. Gwen Lavert

This workshop will equip participants with the resources and tools to move their school and classroom to grade-level proficiency in reading by closing the reading gaps.

Main workshop outcomes:

1. Pre-Phonics Before Phonics: Rigorous and Impactful Strategies
Through a rigorous and impactful session, participants will learn six levels of phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. They will walk away with a sequence and lesson plan framework.

2. Phonics, If not now, NEVER!
Participants will learn in six steps how to provide explicit and systematic strategies in order for students to decode at the speed of sights. Participants will be provided with lesson plans and a sequence chart to implement in the classroom right away.

3. Cognitive Flexibility between Phonological, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension
Participants will learn impactful cognitive skills that will support them in monitoring students thinking in order for them to retain meaning.

This workshop will be an interactive dialogue and work session with participants around the use, implementation, and impact of global education in a classroom setting. Participants will be introduced to a variety of resources and will develop goals based upon their application to each individual's community and / or classroom environment. The workshop will be run in the format of a PBL setting where participants are encouraged to work together in order to collaborate, think through new ideas, and create meaningful resources for their classrooms and schools!

Main workshop outcomes:

1. Interweave global concepts and themes into any lesson
2. Explore a variety of global resources which can be used to enhance instruction
3. Create a global-based PrBL or PBL lesson for your classroom

Compassionate Systems Framework: Taking care of ourselves, each other, and the environment.

This session will help educators develop skills to become change agents in schools or classrooms by using the compassionate systems framework. This framework offers models of thinking and teaching that combine contemplative socio-emotional learning, systems thinking and compassion, and establishes a set of practices that help teachers and students to apply these skills to important issues both within and beyond the classroom.

Authentic Learning Through Project Based Learning

with Dr. Chad LeDune

There is a standard set to maximize student outcomes through Project Based Learning. Dr. LeDune will provide the foundation of PBL, how to guide learners through essential project design elements, as well as, the teaching practices that meet this standard. Participants will learn the vital life skills fostered by PBL and why PBL is viewed as an effective instructional method across all disciplines.

Main workshop outcomes:

1. Attendees will know the essential project design elements of Project Based Learning.
2. Attendees will know the essential teaching practices of Project Based Learning.
3. Attendees will leave with a project outline for use with other educators in their school.
4. Attendees will leave with a rubric developed to meet their needs for assessing PBL in their classroom.
